You're deaf if you have a hearing loss of ninety decibels or more. This means that Deaf children and adults are those that without assistive devices have little to none residual hearing. Some people are born deaf, but your hearing may decline later in life (age deafness). It also happens that people suddenly become deaf in one or both ears. We call suddenly deaf.
Hearing loss may result from genetic causes, complications at birth, certain infectious diseases, chronic ear infections, the use of particular drugs, exposure to excessive noise and ageing
People with hearing loss can benefit from hearing aids, cochlear implants and other assistive devices; captioning and sign language; and other forms of educational and social support.(WHO)
Within Kentalis we provide diagnostics and education to deaf persons, with or without hearing aids or Cochlear Implants. Our audiology centres provide diagnostic services to over 15.000 clients. Our teachers are not only teaching at our own schools but also provide assistance to students and their teachers in mainstream education settings.
From research we know that deaf students, even if with the help of assistive devices their hearing and spoken language development is comparable to their hearing peers, are not hearing learners who do not hear. They learn in different ways and therefore require specific teaching approaches.
At Kentalis we continuously strive to improve our education by doing research and training our teachers.
We provide preprimary, primary and secondary education.
For those who have additional disabilities we have specialized units that offer support, at our schools, but also to other organizations. For those who require intensive care we have residential services where highly specialized care can be provided, based on the individual needs of the person.
We are always looking which way of communication suits the students best. At Kentalis you will find a mix of special schools with and without bilingual deaf education programs, inclusive education programmes and twin schools.
At the Kentalis Academy the latest research and best practices comes together. Nationally and internationally.
